Dental FAQs

At Sea of Pearls Dental Boutique, patient education is a key aspect of our care. We want patients to learn how to care for their teeth at home as well as know more about in-office care. Our lead dentist, Dr. Daniela Oliveira, encourages communication with her patients and always welcomes them to ask about their dental treatments and current symptoms. On this page, read oral health FAQs for new and current dental patients who visit our dental office in East Cobb, GA.

Dental FAQs

Do you have a question for our dentists? Read answers to popular questions many patients have about their dental care.

In what order should you brush and floss your teeth?

Patients should floss between their teeth before they brush their teeth. Flossing removes food debris from between teeth. Then, brushing can easily clean these areas without debris in the way. Patients should brush for two minutes twice a day.

Do I need to use mouthwash?

Flossing and brushing your teeth is enough for the majority of patients. Antibacterial mouthwash can minimize the number of bacteria in the mouth. We may recommend an antibacterial rinse for patients with gingivitis or periodontitis. However, mouthwashes that contain alcohol can actually erode the enamel. Read the mouthwash label to stick to a mouthwash that does not contain alcohol.

Is it safe to visit the dentist if you’re pregnant?

We encourage pregnant patients to continue to visit the dentist for routine visits. Some patients may think that even routine cleanings are unsafe for pregnant patients. This is not true. We recommend that pregnant patients visit for routine care to prevent tooth or gum infections. Pregnant women are also typically more likely to develop a dental infection. Regular dental care and a good oral hygiene routine are important for every patient.

What is plaque, and how does it affect my oral health?

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that can easily build up in the mouth. Over time, if plaque is not cleaned, it hardens to form tartar. Tartar, or calculus, is more difficult to remove. At routine visits, our dental hygienists can provide thorough cleanings that remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums. If plaque and tartar are not removed, it irritates the gums and tooth enamel. Over time, plaque and tartar can lead to gum disease and dental cavities.
